The Story Behind ART
In 2022, I began imagining a tool that would make writing accessibility documentation and reports more accessible. While performing accessibility evaluations, I quickly realized that testing was only half the work. The other half was spent documenting findings, refining issue descriptions, writing clear reproduction steps, and making sure every recommendation included just the right amount of detail. Too often, I found myself spending more time writing reports than actually evaluating digital experiences.
Looking for a better way, I searched for tools that could streamline the reporting process. Unfortunately, there were very few platforms built specifically for accessibility reporting, and even fewer that were both free to use and fully accessible. Like many accessibility professionals, I relied on spreadsheets, document templates, project management software, and other general-purpose tools. Each solved part of the problem, but none were designed around the end-to-end workflow of planning, documenting, managing, and delivering accessibility evaluations. As a screen reader user myself, I also encountered accessibility barriers in many of the tools I depended on every day, making an already time-consuming process even more challenging.
I dreamed of a platform built specifically for accessibility professionals, one that was accessible by design, streamlined repetitive tasks, and let auditors spend more time improving digital experiences instead of formatting reports. Unfortunately, bringing that vision to life required hiring a software developer, which was well beyond my budget. So, for several years, ART existed only as planning documents, storyboards, and ideas.
Everything changed with the rapid advancement of generative AI. As my prompt engineering skills grew, I realized I finally had a way to transform years of planning into a working application without needing to hire a development team. ART was born from the intersection of real-world accessibility expertise and AI-assisted software development, allowing me to build the tool I had always wished existed.
ART was not created to replace the expertise of accessibility professionals. It was created to amplify it.
I knew from early on that I wanted the name of this tool to reflect the diversity and beauty of inclusive experiences.
To me, accessibility testing done well is more than a learned technical skill. It is an art form. It requires curiosity, empathy, critical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to tell the story of a user’s experience in a way that inspires meaningful change. That is why ART, the Accessibility Reporting Tool, felt like the perfect name. It is both an acronym and a reminder that creating accessible digital experiences is a craft.
Today, ART continues to be guided by the same mission that inspired it in 2022: making accessibility reporting faster, easier, and more accessible for everyone. With an accessibility-first interface, customizable keyboard shortcuts, and workflows designed specifically for accessibility professionals, I hope ART empowers auditors to focus less on paperwork and more on improving the digital world.
Because every accessibility report tells a story. ART exists to help tell that story clearly, accurately, and in a way that leads to more inclusive digital experiences for everyone.
